Course Description

When we think of Renaissance art, we most often think of Italy and artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. This course will offer an alternative history of this period by examining six great artists whose careers were based in northern Europe. Some of these artists are better known than others, but each offers an extraordinary opportunity to think about larger issues – the complexity of human nature, the ethics of everyday life, and the presence of the sacred on earth. The artists to be considered are Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein, and Pieter Bruegel.
