The sounds of Teen Idols, Girl Groups, and infamous “Splatter Platter” records had filled some of the void left after the end of the “Golden Age” of Rock and Roll. It is sometimes asserted that the onset of the British Invasion prematurely “snuffed out” some of these American popular music styles that emerged between 1959 and 1963. As I suggest instead, foreign policy events, namely the Congressional passage of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution in August 1964 and the U.S.’s fuller entry into armed conflict in Vietnam, were pivotal to the shift in the music industry after 1963.
