Course Description

This series will examine the history of the Atlantic crossing and its role in immigration to the Americas. Our topics will include the changing technology of the journey, the evolution of the now iconic symbols (Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty) and the businesses (Cunard, North German Lloyd, and Hamburg America) that dominated the Atlantic. We will touch upon the famous ships, disasters, and the elegance (or lack thereof!) that have come to characterize the “image” of life on the Atlantic.
