Course Description

In a white sunhat and blue shorts, the legendary kibbutznik helped to define Israel’s borders and symbolize its early pioneers. Even as the national influence of the Kibbutz movement has faded, most of the 270 agricultural communities endure in new forms. Join Professor David Leach for a wide-ranging and deeply personal journey through the unique phenomenon of the Israeli Kibbutz: from its utopian philosophy and radical experiments in communal child-rearing, to its cultural impacts, political controversies, and economic transformations — and the movement’s tragic return to public consciousness amid the violence of October 7.
