Course Description

In one of William Faulkner’s most famous novels, the Canadian roommate of a college student from Mississippi asks him to “tell about the South.” In this course, we will hear five different Southern authors “tell” about the U.S. South in selected short stories. Our discussions will encompass a broad range of authors, regions, and historical periods across our five sessions. Professor Karem brings his own perspective as a Southerner—born and raised in Kentucky, educated in Texas, and still nurturing his Southern roots in his garden and family recipes. Short readings will be provided in advance of the course.

This course is part of the Senior Scholars Program.
