Course Description

Since the late 1800s, several Jewish artists have depicted Jesus as a Jew, challenging traditional Christian imagery. This course explores the works of artists such as Mark Antokolsky, Marc Chagall, Ephraim Moses Lilien, Maurycy Gottlieb, and Max Liebermann. We will examine how these artists portrayed Jesus’ Jewish identity, what inspired their work, and how their art responded to the social and political climate of their time. We will also discuss how both Jewish and Christian audiences reacted to these bold and thought–provoking images.
