This course traces Charles Darwin’s discoveries to “Social Darwinism,” exploring how phrases like “survival of the fittest” and “natural selection” were used to justify eugenics, racism, colonialism, and genocide. Distinguishing Darwin’s scientific claims from later adaptations, we’ll explore how these ideas still shape debates about poverty, disability, and inequality today. Short, accessible excerpts from Darwin, Social Darwinists, and their critics will form the basis of our discussion and deepen understanding of the concepts.
