Course Description

Jewish musicians made major contributions to European music starting in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before restrictions upon Jews had risen. This short course will explore how composers like Felix Mendelssohn and Giacomo Meyerbeer rose to fame and shaped the music of their time. We’ll also learn about Charles-Valentin Alkan, a brilliant pianist and composer whose works were performed alongside those of Chopin and Liszt. We will discover how these artists helped establish a lasting legacy for Jewish musicians in classical music and changed the course of European musical history.
