Course Description

American art of the 1960s was filled with bold new painting and sculpture. Only in this decade did artists have the confidence to draw from low culture—particularly commercial imagery—and transform it into provocative works that would eventually command soaring prices. In this course, we will explore Pop Art, Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, and Happenings. We will also consider the decade’s major political events, including the civil rights movement, anti-war protests, the moon landing, and
a series of assassinations. If you want to learn about Frank Stella, Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol, Carl Andre, Roy Lichtenstein, and others, join us.
