Course Description

Three Girls of Shanghai tells the remarkable stories of three Jewish women who grew up in Shanghai, China, each belonging to a different Jewish community: Ester Schifren from the Sephardic community, Helga Silberberg from the European refugee community, and Liliane Willens from the stateless Russian community. Based on years of interviews conducted by historian Prof. Kevin Ostoyich and written by Kari-Anne Innes and Ostoyich, the film weaves their testimonies into a powerful narrative performed by actresses Dawn Jeffory-Nelson (Ester Schifren), Kari-Anne Innes (Helga Silberberg), and Angela Giron (Liliane Willens). Their stories illuminate themes of identity, displacement, racism, colonialism, and antisemitism. The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A.
