Course Description

How do we define “Jewish art”? Is that phrase based on subjects, style, symbols, or artist identity? This image-rich talk will ask where and when “modernity” begins and how its arrival affects the role of Jews in art. In the turning to an array of artists, from Pisarro to Chagall to Rothko to Judy Chicago to Anish Kapoor, we will note both the ever-expanding Jewish contribution to the modern and contemporary art worlds, and the preponderant position of women within that contribution, and ask what specifically makes such contributions “Jewish”-both conceptually and visually.
