Course Description

An early case studied in law schools’ criminal classes is the case of Regina v Dudley & Stephens, 1884. As the title of a recent book by Adam Cohen suggests, this story is an opportunity for both a legal and moral conversation. We will examine the events that led to the trial, the trial, and its outcome from both the legal and ethical sides of this grand maritime tale. Please read this book prior to the beginning of the course.
