Course Description

Are there uniquely Jewish poetic forms, symbols, or lenses through which to see the world? Explore modern Hebrew and Yiddish poetry through the lens of language, nationhood, religion, and memory. Examine how poets grapple with belonging, displacement, faith, and cultural renewal—and how poetry became a vessel for shaping Jewish modern identity. Uncover the defining features, central themes, and evolving aesthetics of Jewish and Israeli verse. Then, inspired by these masterworks, participants may create original writing of their own. All materials will be provided in translation to English.
