Course Description

Bullet Holes explores gun violence and America’s political divide through the story of Gary and Pauline Perlmutter, a couple from across the political divide hosting their son Manny’s bar mitzvah in suburban Philadelphia. The recent death of Manny’s twin in a school shooting strains their family’s fragile harmony. Told from nine distinct perspectives, the novel challenges readers to look beyond ideological boundaries. The program begins August 7 with an introduction to the author and his writing, followed by an August 21 discussion using a reader’s guide. Themes include political polarization, the Second Amendment, Jewish identity, intermarriage, grief, aging, and dementia.
