Course Description

This timely course examines Jewish-Muslim relations through historical, cultural, political, and social lenses. Participants will explore the rich and intertwined histories of Jews and Muslims, focusing on shared intellectual traditions and periods of exchange and coexistence. The course also investigates how both communities have been racialized, scapegoated, and marginalized in Europe and the United States, while recognizing the important differences in their experiences. Turning to the present, participants will consider contemporary challenges and opportunities for Jewish-Muslim dialogue, drawing on Prof. Becker-Topkara’s model of intimate, social, and political engagement to explore the possibilities and limits of solidarity in our time.
