Course Description

Nicholas Lemann, acclaimed journalist and former dean of the Columbia Journalism School, presents an intimate memoir tracing five generations of his German- Jewish family’s history in America. Beginning with their 19th century immigration from Germany to New Orleans, the narrative follows their rise to prominence as plantation owners who assimilated into Southern society, and culminates in Lemann’s own return to a more traditional Jewish identity. Blending rigorous journalism with personal reflection, the book explores themes of identity, belonging, assimilation, and the complexities of Southern Jewish American history.
