Course Description

Since the late 19th century, Jewish artists have portrayed Jesus as a Jew, challenging traditional Christian iconography. This course examines works by artists including Mark Antokolsky, Ephraim Moses Lilien, Maurycy Gottlieb, Max Liebermann, Marc Chagall, and others, including contemporary Israeli artists. We will explore how these artists emphasized Jesus’s Jewish identity, the historical and cultural influences behind their work, and the responses of Jewish and Christian audiences. The third session will be an in-person tour of Jesus-themed artworks at the Cleveland Museum of Art, examining Christian artistic traditions that influenced Jewish artists.

The third session will be a tour of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The tour will meet at the Information Desk in the Museum Atrium. Transportation is not provided.
