Course Description

Jewish mysticism underwent remarkable transfor-mation in the early modern era, shaping religious thought and cultural life far beyond its origins. Explore the rise of Safed as the leading center of mystical creativity following the expulsion of Jews from Spain and traces the spread of its teachings across Europe, and examine the groundbreaking ideas of Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria, two of the most influential figures in early modern Jewish thought, while exploring how their teachings reinterpreted earlier mystical traditions. Investigate Italy’s role as a center of transmission, revealing how Safedian mysticism circulated, adapted, and flourished throughout Central Europe.

Reading materials will be provided to students before each lecture.
