Course Description

This course explores women reformers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who used writing, public speaking, organizing, journalism, religion, labor activism, and social reform to challenge injustice. Looking beyond the fight for suffrage, we will consider how women shaped movements for
labor rights, racial justice, religious freedom, immigrant aid, public health, peace, and human rights. Possible figures include Ida B. Wells, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Matilda Joslyn Gage, Ernestine Rose, Clara Lemlich, Rose Schneiderman, Maud Nathan, Lillian Wald, and other Black, Jewish, immigrant, working-class, religious, and radical women reformers.
