Course Description

In this course we will consider artists from northern Europe and southern Europe from 1400 to 1800 who traveled outside their native region—or, at least, whose art did so. Why did 15th century Italian art writers think Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, from Bruges and Brussels, were the greatest contemporary painters, not those in Italy? What impact did the art of Leonardo and Michelangelo have on painting in the Low Countries in the 16th century? How did 17th century painters such as Artemisia Gentileschi and Anthony van Dyck affect the course of art in England and? How did Italy change Rubens? And how did the international careers of Swiss painter Angelika Kauffmann and French painter Elisabeth Vigée-LeBrun spread their fame from southern Italy to Russia? These are some of the major examples we will look together at in this course.
