Course Description

Celebrate Women’s History Month in this discussion of Stephanie Dray’s historical fiction portrayal of Frances Perkins, the first female U.S. cabinet member as Secretary of Labor. We will examine the challenges she faced, both personal and political, as she collaborated with both New York Governors Al Smith and Franklin Roosevelt on significant and lasting initiatives. When FDR became the President, they formed an historic partnership to pull the United States out of the The Great Depression and then create The New Deal, a social safety net for all Americans.
