Course Description

Allegra Goodman, the bestselling author of Isola, returns to a subject that endeared her to readers – navigating American Jewish suburban family life. This Is Not About Us discusses growing up and growing old, the weight of parental expectations, and the complex connection between sisters. The novel is structured as a series of linked stories focused on various family members. The central concerns revolve around generational family conflict, sibling rivalry, and the weight of unspoken resentments. We will discuss the issues that the novel evokes: the modern American Jewish family, waiting for death, family loyalties, lingering guilt, differing traditions, and preserving family ties.
