Course Description

This course will offer insights into the materials and processes that artists use in making art, as well as the methods museum professionals use to conserve and exhibit them. Hear perspectives from conservators, preparators, curators, and educators on the materials, making, care, and display of art. Individual session topics include: the work of Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (French, born Italy, 1695–1750) – one the most revolutionary forerunner of the Rococo style in the decorative arts and considered a genius goldsmith by his contemporaries; the development of printing in China from the 1600s to the international modern woodcut movement in the early 1900s; a special exhibition on Malagasy textiles, Stunning Patterns: Woven Textiles from Madagascar’s Merina Kingdom, which weaves a dynamic story of royalty, resistance, reinvention, and resilience as told through the history of eastern African silk weaving; and discussion of other parts of the museum’s permanent collection
and rotating exhibitions. This on-site course involves walking through the museum galleries. Assisted listening devices are available.
