Course Description

The Supreme Court has had a profound impact on American history. This course will examine key Court decisions and their impact on the course of history. The cases will range from Marbury v. Madison which established the Court's role to decisions impacting slavery and the Civil War, Reconstruction and Jim Crow, New Deal legislation, racial segregation and desegregation in the schools, religion and the Constitution, privacy, abortion, voting and gun ownership rights, campaign financing and the affirmative action decision announced this June. The class will include analysis of the decisions and the historical events directly influenced by them.
