Harriet Jacobs published her memoir Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl in 1860, hoping to raise enough royalties to bring home her daughter. The war broke
out instead. For over a century, historians and the public alike believed the memoir to be a work of fiction—or written by famed author Lydia Maria Childe. The fine writing alongside the extraordinary story made it hard to believe this was nonfiction written by a formerly enslaved woman—but it was.
