Course Description

Maya Arad’s first book translated into English focuses on three Israeli women, their lives altered by immigration to the United States. In the title story, Ilana, an older Israeli woman, reflects on her decades teaching Hebrew at a local unnamed university. In the second story, Miriam, a new grandmother, visits her son and discovers the fault lines in his marriage. The third novella tackles social media’s effect on young people. With a blend of irony and sensitivity, Maya Arad probes the demise of idealism and the generation gaps that her heroines confront.

Read: The Hebrew Teacher by Maya Arad (translated by Jessica Cohen) and read one novella before each session
