Course Description

The Frisco Kid isn’t about a Jewish cowboy, but a Rabbi in the American West. We will study how Jewish cowboys are presented in novels and songs from the early 19th century through modern times. First, we will examine Jewface and ragtime. Then, we will study novels that reference cowboys and musical parodies. We will also learn about Argentinian gauchos and finally, we will look at modern interpretations of cowboys and cowgirls. Overall, this course will examine how the changes in masculinity in the U.S. have affected Jewish men’s representation.
