Course Description

Angela Carter’s 1979 The Bloody Chamber is a collection of ten gothic, erotic short stories, retellings of classic fairy tales such as “Bluebeard” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Carter brought her experience translating the fairy tales collected by Charles Perrault from the French to her own versions of the stories. The Bloody Chamber has since provoked and inspired generations of readers, who continue to debate the violence, sexuality, and meaning of her work. Are her stories feminist? Are they anti-feminist? Are they still relevant in the twenty-first century?
